Newlywed Killer Gets Life In Prison

The newlywed murderer has been sentenced to an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole.

Michel Escoto was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Wendy Trapaga.

Prosecutors convinced a Miami-Dade jury that Escoto premeditated the killing in order to cash in on a one-million dollar life insurance policy.

During the sentencing hearing, prosecutor Gail Levine said, "Wendy's life was short, but her road to justice was long."

Trapaga's family wore T-shirts with her photo printed on them, while Escoto sat in the jury box in a red jail jumpsuit, the color reserved for high-profile inmates.

The victim's family spoke ahead of the sentencing, her sister calling Escoto a "soulless monster" and telling him she hopes he will "continue to pay long after your body is six feet under."

Escoto also addressed the family before his sentencing, saying their pain is "logical."

Further, he accused Miami-Dade Police detectives of lying under oath in order to push for his conviction.

A motion for a new trial was denied.
