Miami-Dade Public Schools student-athletes could be randomly drug tested beginning this upcoming 2014-2015 school year.

The pilot program is set to be implemented in the wake of the Biogenesis scandal.

And, following the arrest of seven people Tuesday in that case for illegally providing steroids to prominent sports figures and local high school athletes, the district decided to move forward with the previously-approved plan.

School Board Member Raquel Regalado originally proposed the program.

Regalado says coaches will be discussing the matter at their upcoming annual meeting.

Once the school year begins, parents will be informed of the new policy, and students participating in sports and certain other extracurricular activities will be subject to the random testing.

Forms parents must sign for students to be able to participate in these programs will now include the drug testing component.

If the drug testing consent form is not signed, the student will not be allowed to play or participate in the particular program.

Regalado says the school board will seek private funding for implementation of the plan.
