Miami Beach Commissioners Expected to Approve New Police Chief Wednesday

Miami Beach is on the cusp of naming a new police chief.

Commissioners are expected to approve the city manager's selection of Aurora, Colorado Police Chief Dan Oates.

Joy Malakoff believes the 59-year-old is a great choice because "he seems like a really dedicated professional.  He also is a lawyer by training, which I think is very helpful; and the city of Miami Beach needs a real quality police service."

The commissioner feels while trying to keep citizens safe, Oates will meet with officers and residents to handle a series of controversies, including excessive force complaints, plaguing the agency.

Oates stresses use of force training.

He helped lead the New York Police Department during troubled times and was the face of Aurora's police department following a movie theater massacre.

Commissioner Deede Weithorn hopes "we never need that experience in Miami Beach, but it's really comforting to know that we have someone who unfortunately has been tested in the most tragic of situations."

Current Miami Beach Police Chief Raymond Martinez is retiring and taking over security for the Ultra Music Festival.
