KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) _ A British scholar and academic writer has won the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition, the literary highlight of Key West's annual salute to Ernest Hemingway.

Lizzy Welby of London earned $1,500 for ``The Breakers,'' announced Friday night as the best of 938 American and international submissions.

Lorian Hemingway, Ernest Hemingway's granddaughter, said Welby's story was among the most moving and exquisitely rendered in the contest's 34-year history. It focuses on a French shipwreck and the islanders who must deal with victims' bodies washing ashore.

Hemingway Days celebrates the literary legacy and vigorous lifestyle of the author who lived in Key West in the 1930s.

Saturday's events include the culmination of the ``Papa'' Hemingway Look-Alike Contest and the Running of the Bulls, Key West's whimsical response to its namesake in Pamplona, Spain.
